Thomas Rickenmann returns to the three families he portrayed three years earlier during the annual cattle drive up to the alpine pastures in the film “z’Alp”. In his second film, we spend the entire summer high up in the Alpstein of the Appenzell Alps, in the Bernese Oberland and in Central Switzerland.

In this second film, we spend the entire summer high up in the Alpstein of the Appenzell Alps, in the Bernese Oberland and in Central Switzerland. We experience the summer season for Alpine farmers above the timberline – with or without the mobile phone – where it’s not minutes that count, but rather how you deal with nature. The film may seem like “wellness for the soul”, but the three families depend on Alpine farming for their survival, and the barrenness and hardship in the inhospitable setting at such lofty altitudes lend beauty and grandeur to their summer season.
