After working for 23 years as an expert on agritourism in Tuscany, Walter Messmer, former head of vocational training at a major bank, returns to Switzerland. As a fitting conclusion to his time in Tuscany, he has decided to depart from Italy at an oxens pace. With his two Maremmano oxen Gandhi and Galileo yoked to the open wagon, he intends to trek across the Apennines and the Alps to his native village of Diepoldsau in the Rhine Valley, accompanied by friends from Tuscany. But the preparations for his trip are already eventful and rife with uncertainties, and Walters Italian tales are a world apart. The journey remains an adventure to the very end.
