Rua, 50 years old, came to Switzerland full of hope for a new and better life. Today, half a century later, she has only one passion left: money. Rua owns a canteen in Zurich, which she manages with a firm grip and financial success. Her life consists of tightly planned routines; work at the canteen, counting the daily earnings, eating supper alone in her small Zurich apartment. Rua has built her existence in Switzerland and does not contemplate moving back to her home country Serbia. Mila, 60 years old and Rua's long-time employee, is different. She has lived in Switzerland with her husband and son for decades working hard with the aim of fulfilling her life dream, owning a house in Croatia, her home land.
The orderly lives of Rua and Mila and the work routine at the canteen shift when 22-year old Ana from Sarajevo enters the scene. Ana is beautiful, impulsive and searching for a new start in life in a new country. She wanders around aimlessly fleeing from her past: The recent war in Bosnia. In need of money Ana accepts a job at the canteen. Although she is a good worker, she challenges Rua's strict rules. Hiding her homelessness from her workplace, Ana wanders alone at night through the city searching for refuge and warmth through random affairs.
Rua feels threatened by Ana's direct manner while at the same time she is intrigued by her zest for life. The surprise birthday party that Ana organizes for Rua, exposes the lingering conflicts between the three women and triggers a series of changes: Rua lets herself go and passionately dances. The next morning she wakes up not only with a hang-over and embarrassed, but with a new appetite and openness for life. Slowly a friendship develops between Rua and Ana. However, a certain distance between them remains: Rua afraid to open herself up completely, and Ana with a secret too difficult for herself to reveal.
